Bathrooms with character in a village setting
Yarragon is a village with a strong sense of place. Its main street, lined with cafes, galleries and specialty shops, draws visitors travelling along the highway, while the streets behind are home to a close-knit community living in a mix of older cottages, postwar homes and newer houses. To the south, the land climbs into the hills of Yarragon South, where farms and lifestyle properties look back across the valley towards the Baw Baw Ranges.
Many people who choose Yarragon do so for its character, and they want bathrooms that suit it. We renovate bathrooms, ensuites and laundries throughout Yarragon and Yarragon South, starting each project with a design consultation, working to a written scope, using licensed and insured trades and installing waterproofing to AS 3740.
Village cottages
The older homes in Yarragon’s town streets are often weatherboard cottages with modest floor plans, timber floors on stumps and bathrooms that were added or extended over the years. These bathrooms tend to be small and may share space with the laundry or sit at the back of the house in a former verandah. Renovating them is a careful balancing act between preserving character and adding modern comfort.
We often recommend finishes that complement the period of the house: vertical-stacked or classic subway wall tiles, patterned or hexagonal floor tiles, a vanity on legs with a stone top, and tapware in brushed nickel or aged brass. Behind these traditional finishes, the construction is thoroughly modern, with a stiffened floor, wet-area linings, a proper membrane, correct falls and effective ventilation. The bathroom looks like it belongs in the house but performs like a new one.
Tree-changers and new arrivals
Yarragon has attracted many people moving from Melbourne for a quieter life. New arrivals often buy older homes with original bathrooms and want to renovate soon after moving in. A common brief is a bathroom that feels calm and refined, with natural materials and a sense of retreat. We help clients who are new to the area understand how local conditions affect their choices, such as the cool, damp climate, the effect of tank water on shower performance and the importance of ventilation.
Combined bathrooms and laundries
In smaller cottages, the bathroom and laundry are often combined in a single room. This can work well with careful planning, but many of these rooms are cramped and poorly organised. Options include separating the laundry into a concealed cupboard elsewhere, creating a more efficient combined layout with a stacked washer and dryer behind doors, or relocating the laundry to free up the bathroom. We look at the whole house to find the best arrangement.
Rural properties in Yarragon South
Yarragon South’s hilly farmland and lifestyle blocks bring rural considerations: tank water, septic or on-site wastewater systems, exposure to wind and rain and laundries that double as mudrooms. We assess these during the consultation and plan accordingly. Showerheads and tapware are chosen to perform well on tank pumps, fixtures suit the wastewater system and laundries are designed for muddy boots and wet gear. On elevated sites with views, we consider how windows can frame the outlook while staying weathertight.
Light in small cottage bathrooms
Many Yarragon cottages have small bathrooms with a single window, often on the south or east side, and the rooms can feel dim on grey winter days. Light makes a small room feel larger and cleaner, and there are several ways to bring more in. A skylight or roof window above the shower or vanity can transform a dark bathroom, provided it is properly flashed and ventilated. A larger mirror reflects window light deeper into the room. Lighter tiles and grout, used thoughtfully, brighten the space without making it feel clinical. Layered artificial lighting, with a bright, even light at the mirror and a warmer light for evenings, completes the picture. We plan lighting as part of the design rather than leaving it as an afterthought.
Planning a renovation in a single-bathroom home
Most of Yarragon’s cottages have just one bathroom, which makes a renovation more disruptive. We plan the work so the toilet stays in use for as long as possible and give you a clear schedule showing when the bathroom will be out of action. Some clients arrange to shower at a gym or with family for part of the project, while others hire a portable bathroom for the main construction period. We discuss the options during the consultation so you can plan ahead.
Colours drawn from the landscape
Yarragon is surrounded by green paddocks, forested hills and big skies, and many clients want their bathroom to feel connected to that setting. Soft greens, warm stone, sandy neutrals and natural timbers sit comfortably in a village cottage and age well. Glazed tiles in deep forest green or ochre can provide a striking feature in a shower or behind a vanity. Paired with brushed brass or soft black tapware, these palettes feel relaxed and timeless rather than trendy. We bring samples to your home so you can see how they look in your bathroom’s light before making a decision.
Working on village streets
Many Yarragon homes sit on narrow streets with limited parking. We plan deliveries, skip placement and trade parking to avoid inconveniencing neighbours and keep footpaths clear.

Retaining original features
Some Yarragon homes still have original features worth keeping: a cast-iron bath, timber-framed windows, a pressed-metal ceiling or decorative architraves. Where it is practical, we can work around these features or incorporate them into the new design. A restored bath can become the centrepiece of a new bathroom, and an original window can be retained with careful waterproofing around it. Where original features are beyond repair, we can suggest sympathetic replacements.
Older homes and hidden problems
In older cottages, the bathroom floor often hides problems. Years of water escaping around the bath or shower can rot floorboards and joists. Stumps may have settled, leaving the floor uneven. Plumbing may be a mix of materials from different decades. Wiring may not meet current standards for wet areas. We strip the room back to its frame, inspect everything and repair what is needed before building the new bathroom. In homes built before the late 1980s, we arrange testing for materials that may need licensed removal.
The climate in Yarragon
Like the rest of West Gippsland, Yarragon has cool, damp winters with frequent fog. Bathrooms in older weatherboard cottages can be cold and slow to dry, leading to mould on ceilings and grout. Every bathroom we renovate includes an exhaust fan sized for the room and ducted outside. We can add insulation when walls and ceilings are opened, and heated towel rails or underfloor heating for winter comfort. Waterproofing membranes are allowed the full curing time, which can be longer in colder months.
Ageing in place
Yarragon has a strong community of older residents, many of whom want to stay in their homes and village. An accessible bathroom with a level-entry shower, grab rails, a comfortable toilet height and slip-resistant floors can make that possible. In small cottages, creating enough space may mean removing a bath or rearranging fixtures. We design accessible bathrooms that feel warm and residential, and work with occupational therapists where specific needs exist.
Short-stay accommodation
Yarragon’s popularity with visitors means some homes are used as short-stay accommodation. Bathrooms in these properties need to impress guests, withstand frequent cleaning and be easy to maintain. We suggest durable porcelain tiles, sealed or epoxy grout, quality tapware with readily available parts, good lighting and plenty of hooks and shelves. A thoughtfully designed bathroom can leave a lasting impression on guests and reduce maintenance between bookings.
